Isolated from outdoor or architectural settings this collection enables a number of pots to be shown in more detail. This discloses the variety of colours in what may seem at first sight ‘black’ pots. Close up views show the minute attention paid to form at the neck of the pot, crucial for the sense of closure that gives the pots their understated authority. The variety of patterning that results from the subdivision into horizontal and vertical banding is clearly revealed. Chevrons alternate with vertical scoring and open panels to give a complex geometric language, one that repays visual decoding at the same time as it maintains the integrity of the pot as a sculpture in space.
